Art and Science on the Brain

We went to barbican for a mini fair. Its about neuroscience and art and its in partnership with Wellcome trust. I thought it will be more educational. But afterall its still quite good. Lots of kids playing around and got all sorts of activities. I really appreciate the people who organize this as it’s really suitable for all people, from kids to parents. So these are some of the activties that I can remembered.

1. Some shows and talks which explains about the brain. I went to the one about hypnotism, turns out it’s a show for kids lol  Anyways, the guy which  performed hula hoop was really good. So impressed.

2.There’s one for you to seat down comfortably to knit a cute neurone. suitable for mums :P

3. They got different kinds of smell in each of the test tube and we need to write down what does it reminds us of. I think this is explaining the short and long term memory(not sure). Some smell will be very familiar but you cant tell where is it from. Some of them are so strong that you can tell whats that immediately.

4. They got some soft clays for you to make your own little brain. Build the brain yourselves by combining the essential parts of it. Such as the stem and the hippocampus

5.  You can go into a room and laid down on the pillows then go on a website which got 6 types of brainwave on the screen. We can chose it and a unique piece of music which represent that brainwave will be played. They got Alpha, Beta, Gamma, etc. And the one i found most interesting  is Mu. It appears when at rest and once we begin to move, the wave will disappear. There are different patterns of activity in our brain at any second. Can’t imagine how busy my brain is.

6.The best one is the jelly brain which is fully booked for the whole day. Its like the lecturer got a brain made by panna cotta and he explained each part of the brain and what it’s responsible from the jelly. He then slices them into pieces and give it to us to eat (:(: learn a lot after that session. Now i know that the front part of the brain is responsible for your personality. There’s a story, Phineas P. Gage was an American railroad construction foreman now remembered for his improbable survival of an accident in which a large iron rod was driven completely through his head, destroying much of his brain’s left frontal lobe, and for that injury’s reported effects on his personality and behavior, effects so profound—for a time, at least—that friends saw him as “no longer Gage”(cited from wikipedia) There are two parts of the brain which is responsible for language and speech. One of them are for understanding languages and one are for speaking and explaining through language(similar to input and output).

There are a lot more but i have forgotten already.
